Top Ten, Most Asked Questions of Our Nail Technician, Laura Aldana

Last week, we asked our Skin Care professional, Aileen Rego, the top ten questions we’re most asked about skin.  Thank you Aileen for the informative Beauty Inside.

Since we are always seeking the answers to questions regarding our client’s health, beauty and fashion, we decided to gets answers to the top ten, most asked questions regarding nails.  We recently sat down with Laura Aldana, our Nail Technician, and asked her these questions.  Again, we are amazed at the education and the passion that our nail technician, our skin care professional and all of our stylists have for their clients and their profession.

1Are there any vitamins you can take that help make your nails grow stronger?
A: I would like to begin by saying I am not a doctor, nor do I claim to be.  It has been said that vitamins C, D, E, B-12, and A will help to keep the natural nails strong and healthy.  One of the best ways to do this is through consuming fresh foods.

2.How does it help your nails to drink more water?
A: Drinking water helps to hydrate dry, damaged nails, just like it does for hair and skin.

3. If there was one thing you did for your nails, what would it be?
A: I would apply cuticle oil twice a day!  It keeps your cuticles and nails healthy.

4. What is the difference between a manicure and a gel manicure?
A: A regular manicure can last anywhere from 2 to 5 days depending on the use of your hands.  A gel manicure can last up to 2 weeks or more once again depending on the use of your hands .  It is applied the same way as regular polish .  Expect that there is a 2 minute “curing” process in between coats.  It stays put and stays shiny much longer than a regular manicure would.

5. Is there anything different between summer and winter care for your manicures and pedicures?
A: Both seasons are hard on the hands and feet, as summer and winter are both very drying to the skin. The key is to keep your skin and nails as hydrated as possible inside and out.  That means using a deep moisturizing body cream from fingers to toes regularly and drink plenty of water.

6.Do you think men should get manicures?  Do you have men clients?
A: Yes, I am a strong believer in male manicures and pedicures.  Men are just as, if not rougher, on their nails and cuticles and can truly benefit from regular manicures and pedicures.  Yes, I do have male clients.

7.Is there a difference between lotions that are marketed as hand cream instead of body lotions?
A: Yes. Usually hand creams are much thicker and more emulsifying.

8. How often should you get manicures and pedicures?
A: I would suggest getting a manicure every two weeks and a pedicure every two to four weeks.

9.What is the difference between ‘natural nails’ and acrylics?
A: Natural nails means all services provided help to maintain the health and integrity of the natural nail, while acrylic can cause excessive damage to the nail plate during services and after removal.  Serious damage can result without proper removal of any artificial service.

10. How can you be sure your nail technician is being careful about passing germs from client to client?
A: Always make sure the manicurist has their manicurist state license posted where it is visible.  This certificate shows that he/she has undergone extensive training in proper sanitation procedures.  I would like to add that the best evidence of good hygiene practices remains you own observation.  Take a look around and see for yourself that the area is clean and tidy.  As it ALWAYS should be.
